OAS SECRETARY GENERAL LAMENTS TRAGEDY IN ECUADOR AND CALLS FOR
RAPID INTERNATIONAL AID

The Secretary General of the
Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, expressed sorrow
over the tragedy in Ecuador caused by the eruption of the Tungurahua volcano,
which has severely affected seven of the country’s provinces, causing the loss
of human life, the displacement of tens of thousands of people, and devastating
economic damages.
The Secretary General called
for international solidarity so that the people affected by this disaster can
receive immediate attention and can be moved to a secure location. “Besides
making a symbolic contribution from a special emergency fund, we are consulting
with the Pan American Development Foundation and other hemispheric and
international institutions to identify available resources and direct them
towards the populations that need them the most,” the OAS Secretary General
said.
During the last few days, the
Tungurahua volcano – located in the center of the Andean nation, 135 kilometers
south of Quito – reached its peak activity levels in nearly seven years, spewing
large quantities of lava, rock and ash that devastated nearby villages and
caused the destruction of thousands of hectares of crops which are a key source
of revenue for the local population.

El Secretario
General de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA), José Miguel Insulza,
lamentó la tragedia que vive Ecuador a causa de la erupción del volcán
Tungurahua, que ha afectado severamente a siete provincias del país, dejando
pérdidas humanas, decenas de miles de damnificados y devastadores daños
económicos.
El Secretario
General hizo un llamado a la solidaridad internacional para que las personas
afectadas por este desastre natural reciban atención inmediata y puedan ser
reubicadas en un lugar seguro. “Además de aportar una contribución simbólica de
un fondo especial para emergencias, estamos consultando con la Fundación
Panamericana para el Desarrollo y otras instituciones hemisféricas e
internacionales, con el fin de identificar los recursos disponibles y
orientarlos a las poblaciones que más lo requieran”, dijo el Secretario General
de la OEA.
En los últimos
días, el volcán Tungurahua, ubicado en el centro del país andino —135 kilómetros
al sur de Quito—, alcanzó su punto eruptivo más alto en casi siete años,
expulsando grandes cantidades de lava, roca y ceniza que arrasaron los pequeños
poblados cercanos y ocasionando la destrucción de miles de hectáreas de cultivos
que son fuente de ingreso para la población.
En un esfuerzo por
ayudar a las víctimas, la Asociación del Personal de la OEA ha abierto la cuenta

en la Cooperativa de Ahorro y Crédito, y solicita sus contribuciones.
Cheques deben ser emitidos a nombre de “Disaster Relief Fund”.
Contribuciones
serán aceptadas hasta el 30 de septiembre de 2006.
