The OAS LGBTQI Group is pleased to invite you to a discussion on:

Milestones in the Protection of LGBTI Rights in the Americas:

The Role of the OAS General Assembly and the IACHR

Date: Thursday, February 19, 2015

Time: 1:00 PM – 2:00PM

Location: Gabriela Mistral Room (GSB)

In the Americas, as in the rest of the world, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (“LGBTI”) persons have historically been discriminated against on the basis of their real or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and bodily diversity, and continue to be victims of discrimination, violence, persecution and other abuses; which infringe on their human rights protected by international and Inter-American instruments.

Since 2008, the General Assembly - the supreme organ of the OAS - has adopted seven resolutions on the subject, assuming specific political commitments regarding LGBTI persons and condemning all forms of violence and discrimination against people because of their sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.

This discussion will highlight OAS General Assembly resolutions and cases of the LGBTI Rapporteurship of IACHR pertaining to the rights of LGBTI persons in the Americas.

Speakers:

  • Dante Negro, Director of the  Department of International Law, OAS
  • Fanny Gómez Lugo, Staff attorney, LGBTI Rapporteurship, IACHR
  • Lucas Ramón Mendos, Consultant attorney, LGBTI Rapporteurship, IACHR
  • Gabriel Alves de Faria, Legal Fellow-attorney, LGBTI Rapporteurship, IACHR
